CMS Version 5.2.3 release notes

Introduction

Welcome to CMS version 5.2.3! This update focuses on the CMS modifications necessary to support the new shipping rates for USPS which are effective May 11th, 2009. Other minor changes have been added along with a few reports and of course bug fixes. See below for additional comments/recommendations on when to install CMS updates that affect shipping rates.

Important : If you are updating from 4.x, you will need to install the upgrade on the server and the workstations. If you are already on version 5.x, only a server update is required.

READ BEFORE INSTALLING 5.2.3

RELEASE CODES - You may install this update using your current release code. No new release code is required. This release code should be populated for you automatically when installing. If you need it though, you can retrieve it by logging into the Support Downloads section of our website or contact us directly.

If you are running CMS version 4.x, you may still use this version to update but we strongly encourage you to read the 5.0 release notes before proceeding.

No workstation updates are required with 5.2. You will only need to update your server.

When to Install - The shipping rates in CMS will be updated when you install the 5.2.3 update. As such, you should time the installation of your update to coincide with when you want the new rates to be available.

Having the current rates in CMS does not impact your ability to ship properly with any of the CMS shipping integrations. In every case, the software that prints the shipping label (e.g. Worldship, Endicia/DaZzle, Ship Manager, ShipRush, etc.) determines the proper rate for the shipment and thus how you are billed.

Having the current rates in CMS is often more of a reference. Its greatest impact, though, is in situations where the shipping and handling charge you charge to your customer is based on the carrier's actual rate (instead of a spending table or other formulas.) If this is how you charge your customers for shipping and handling you will want to make sure you have this update installed so you have the proper rates.

READ BEFORE USING 5.2.3

Database changes (Provided for the benefit of those who write their own reports or connect to the CMS database from other applications.)

No database changes were made in 5.2.3. Database changes were, however, made in previous CMS releases (5.0, 4.0.4 and 4.0.) Please refer to their release notes for details on those changes.

XML Changes - Provided for the benefit of those importing orders into CMS via XML.

No XML changes in 5.2.3 but there were changes in 5.0. The 5.0 release notes should be consulted for more information.

Windows Vista and 2008 Server:

We are continuing to test CMS on Windows Vista. While we have not formally announced support for Vista yet, early testing has not revealed any compatibility problems with Vista Business or Vista Ultimate. As with Windows XP, we will not be supporting the 'Home' versions of Vista including Vista Basic and Vista Home Premium. Until we announce support for Vista you should continue to run CMS on Windows 2000 Pro or XP Pro for your workstations. We will continue testing Vista and will likely announce support for the Business and Ultimate editions later this year.

2008 Server is the 'Vista' version or replacement for 2003 Server. Like Vista, we cannot yet support this operating system. If you are purchasing a new server you'll want to use 2003 Server. While 2008 Server will require many of the same modifications (namely to the installer) that we'll have to make for Vista, your database server (Sybase) is also running on the server so that too must be tested to ensure compatibility. As such, Vista support will be announced before 2008 Server. However, unlike XP Pro, 2003 Server will continue to be available for some time so you should not have any troubles finding a server with this operating system.

5.2.3 ENHANCEMENT DETAILS

  1. USPS Shipping rates - All rates updated for domestic UPS shipping methods supported by CMS. These include:

    1st Class Package
    Media Mail
Parcel Post - Note that Parcel Post is no longer based on inter/intra-BMC or machinable/non. It is purely a zone and weight based shipping method.

Details on the USPS May 11th 2009 rate change can be read here.

  2. Physical Inventory report enhanced- We've added a column to this report for 'allocated'. This column represents all of the stock that has been decremented from the total inventory count in CMS and allocated to unshipped orders. This will help you compare your physical counts to those in the report in situations where you have not been able to pick/ship all of the orders in CMS before counting. For example, if you have 10 on the shelf but 2 are allocated to unshipped orders, the stock level in CMS and the report would have said 8 but there would be 10 on the shelf. Now, in the new version of the report, you will see 8 in stock plus 2 allocated.

The only way CMS knows if an item has been picked is if it is shipped. To effectively use this report you must be setting shipped dates on your orders and have done so for all picked orders before printing the report.

  3. Taxable Sales report added - Unlike the Taxes Collected report, which shows you exactly what taxable orders you had and what you collected, this report takes the opposite approach and looks at total sales for each tax definition (and tax rate) and displays the totals in a cross-tab style report for each price category. This is an alternative to the Product Sales Breakdown report which presents the same information but many have reported that it has been a confusing report to use and interpret. This new Taxable Sales report is available under Reports>Sales.

  4. Tax Configuration report added - The report will give you a listing of all of the tax categories you presently have setup. For companies that have hundreds of tax categories here, this report will help you verify your list is complete and that you do not have duplicate entries. This report is available from Setup>Inventory>Product Tax Categories.

  5. Product Sales by Volume enhanced - This report now displays the date range the report was run for.

  6. Crystal Invoice improved - The stock Crystal invoice released in 5.0 (InvoiceTemplate.rpt) now has improved pick tickets for recipients of multi-ship orders in addition to assorted other minor enhancements.

  7. Product Groups now compatible with Continuity - The Product Group feature which allows you to add multiple items to an order just by entering a single product code now can also be used with the Continuity feature which lets you schedule future shipments.

  8. Customer Merging enhanced - In previous versions of CMS, if you merged two customers, only the 'merge into' customer's Primary Notes would be retained. Now the notes from both customers will be merged together as part of the Merge process.

  9. Yahoo Imports enhanced - We've added support for the gift notes on orders imported from a Yahoo store. These will now map properly into the Gift Notes in CMS for gift orders.

  10. Credit Card Masking enhanced - If you are using the credit card masking option, you'll now find it now applies to credit cards numbers displayed in the Returns and the Credits/Refunds section.

BUG
FIXES

LIST OF FIXED BUGS (versions 5.2.2.108 through 5.2.3.139) – If you've reported a bug or asked for a software change and we provided you with a case number, this number refers to the case number in our Request Tracker (RT) software.
